The year is 2014. Tone has spent the last 15 years in a New York state prison, serving a 20-year sentence for armed robbery. Trapped in the harsh and violent environment of prison, Tone tries to reach out to the outside world. Becca is a court reporter in Chicago. She struggles to find meaning in a life that seems continually defeating. Anger and loss of trust in life’s process has left them both in a prison of their own minds. What starts out as a friendly letter-writing experiment turns into an exchange of deeply personal beliefs and experiences. They find a sounding board and an undeniable friendship. They challenge each other’s perceptions of the opposite sex and of themselves. They discover a connection that honors their true selves—and the importance of being fully present in each moment of their lives.
The character of Becca describes this unique friendship:
“The minister who told me about this pen pal stuff said sometimes, inmates have tried to get money from him. One time, an inmate started saying a bunch of sexual stuff about his wife. He kept saying he didn’t go into this expecting it will always be easy or good. This is about human connection, and not everybody is ready, willing, or able to connect. You don’t have to save or fix anyone. They don’t have to save or fix you. It’s just two humans being open to a positive connection. We’re humans. I think we’re doing OK. I think we’re going with the flow. I think we’re pretty cool, actually.”
